Happy Birthday today to Gilbert, SC native and current Red Sox player Chris Owings. Chris was born on August 12, 1991 in Charleston, SC. He was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 1st round (41st overall) of the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft out of Gilbert High School. The Diamondbacks had scouted the Owings family well — in 2012 they signed pitcher Kyle Owings, Chris’ older brother, to minor league contract. In 2016, Arizona drafted Chris’ younger brother, Connor Owings, out of Coastal Carolina University. Connor was a member of the Chanticleers who won the 2016 College World Series.
Chris has spent 6 seasons in the Majors with Arizona (2013-2018). In 2016, Chris led the NL in triples with 11. Chris signed with the KC Royals in 2018 and then with Boston in 2019. After hitting .325 with 11 HR with 34 RBI in 44 games with the Red Sox’ Triple-A affiliate, Pawtucket, Boston called Owings up to the Majors on August 11th this year.
